Growing up in British Columbia made it easy for me to start mountain biking. My hometown Courtenay and Hornby Island, where we have a summer cabin, have incredible trails and I got hooked on riding around 14-15yrs old. I played almost every other sport but none had the lifestyle or gave me the enjoyment that mountain biking does.

The biggest challenge as a competitor is leading a balanced life. I wouldn't want to give it up but it is a very transient life on the road and it is hard being away from family and friends all the time.

My first Olympics in 2000 was very special as I achieved a childhood dream to compete. My first World Cup win in Bromont last year was probably more significant for me as an athlete and something I will always remember.

It is always embarrassing when you fall off in a race. I just try to hope no one catches in on film or video. I had one that I wasn't too proud of at the Hawaiian Mountain Tour; it made it all the way on to the ESPN blooper real for quite a while.

There are two things that I really like about Maxxis. First is their commitment to support racing on all levels; I always know there are 100% behind me. The second thing is tires; when I started riding for Maxxis in 2004 the product was great and their commitment to improving the tires every year has been exceptional.

When I have some down time it is a luxury to just be able to relax at home and spend time with my family and animals. Especially after the season I really enjoy hitting some fun group trails ride followed by some good food and a few drinks.

These days I have a limited amount of time in the off-season to hit the snow but I really enjoy both Nordic and alpine touring when I get the chance. I wish I had more time for some golf and I played a lot of basketball growing. I still enjoy shooting some hoops as well as going for a jog with my dogs.

For me nothing beats a really good fresh baguette along with a selection of fine cheese and a little candied salmon.

Belgian Beer; specifically Trappiste ales.

I admire people who pursue their passion, are successful, and don't let the success change who they are.

I think European World Cups are the toughest races I do. With 240 guys on the start line there is no room for error and everyone is fighting for every inch.

Wintersleep, Tegan and Sara, K'naan, Hey Rosetta, Great Lake Swimmers, Metric, Weakerthans, AC/DC, Caribou

Espresso, Beer, Canadian Indie Music, Vancouver Canucks, F1, Supercross, Rally

Probably self-employed or running my own business; I will try to avoid a 9-5 job as long as possible.

Why do Canadians feel Hockey is better than football? Unlike baseball and American football, you can't play professional hockey if you are obese.

Thanks to all the great supporters of our team as well as my personal supporters Oakley, Rona, and the Canadian National Team. Also a special thanks to my wife Ms. Pink, my family, and my dogs for all their love and support. Keep riding until the fun stops.
